Columbia High School “Pride of Columbia County” Marching Tiger Band: This is the name of the Columbia High School Marching Band. This unit is comprised of all members of the CHS Band and Color. Performances include: football games, parades, Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) Festivals and other competitions. The Marching Band is active for the entire FALL semester. The Pride of Columbia County generally perform their entire show at one or two festivals and the Florida Bandmasters Association District Marching Performance Assessment held at Columbia High School .The band participates in community events such as the Homecoming, Veteran's Day Christmas Martin Luther King and the Olustee parades every year. Columbia High School “Pride of Columbia County” Marching Tiger Band rehearses on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30. A mandatory preseason band camp is held approximately two weeks prior to the first day of school to establish fundamentals and begin learning the show. Members of the CHS Color Guard are enrolled in the school course titled Eurhythmics I, and will observe all policies contained in this handbook. Performances include those listed under the Marching Band as well as indoor Guard performances during the second semester. Membership is based on audition and/or director recommendation. Eurhythmics I is a semester long class. Over the summer, there is a mandatory band camp three weeks before school starts where we learn dance technique, marching fundamentals, our routines, and teamwork. In addition to practicing with the band, there will also be extra scheduled practices. Refer to the Calendar of Events for a schedule of performances/assessments. No experience is required to participate in CHS Color Guard. Tryouts are held in April after students have an opportunity to learn basic fundamentals in preparation. Membership is based on audition. The Symphonic Band performs concerts in the school and community and represents Columbia School in all Florida Bandmasters Association Festivals. Symphonic Band members are also to participate in the Marching Band. Most recently, the 2006-2007 Symphonic Band earned a straight Excellent rating at the State Concert Music Performance Assessment. This is the second time in the school’s History. ___________________________________________________________________________________ CONCERT BAND: Comprised of students whose performance experience is more limited than of the Symphonic band. Membership is also based on audition. Performance is similar to those described under the Symphonic Band. Students in the Concert Band are also to participate in the Marching Band. The Concert band will meet after school during the Spring Semester. ___________________________________________________________________________________ JAZZ ENSEMBLE: A modern band whose repertoire includes jazz and other popular idioms of music. Membership is based on audition and/or director recommendation. Performance may include concerts, community events, and festivals. The Jazz Ensemble will be scheduled during early bird and is a year long class. The Columbia High School Jazz Band is an opportunity for students to expand their exposure to music of different styles. Students are exposed to big band, latin, rock, and contemporary styles within the jazz idiom in a setting that emphasizes performance techniques appropriate to the literature. The Jazz Band performs at the FBA District Solo and Ensemble Festival in February. The Jazz Band will also participate in several concerts and community events throughout the year. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Percussion Ensemble/Columbia Drum Line “CDL”: Comprised of all CHS percussion students. The students will study different percussion techniques and perform together at Solo and Ensemble and other festivals and community events. During the Fall Semester the Percussion Class works on Marching Cadences and prepares a percussion feature for the marching show as well as for parades. A mandatory Drum Line clinic is required for all percussionist will occur in May and a Percussion camp will be held a three weeks prior to the start of school. |
